It’s the holiday season and our small town is decked out in festive lights. This time of year Bardstown is especially pretty at night, with the town square brightly lit in holiday colors.
Four Roses Distillery
At the risk of seeming like a lush…we’re back on the Bourbon Trail for a visit to Four Roses Distillery.
For all the Bourbon Snobs out there, this one’s for you.
Everyone else can relax. Put down the phone. No need to call the Fish & Game warden, we’re not hunting endangered birds of prey.
This is about bourbon.
It’s turnip season. Before a hard frost knocks out the last of the garden produce, it’s time for a drive around our rural neighborhood. Let’s see what we can find…
Remember when a Saturday night date only cost you $10? Yeah, me neither.
It’s been a long time since we had a good cheap date. And we found three in a row for just ten bucks. Even out here in the country where prices are pretty low, this was a good deal.
Okay, I’m a trespasser. An interloper. Snoop with a lens.
I wander around old barns and factories. I peek into empty houses and under stadium bleachers. I investigate train tracks, dead end roads, and construction sites. I’ll poke around any place that looks interesting. That’s trespassing, you say. I call it a photo opportunity.
It’s a victimless crime.
Really, I’m not a vandal, just a camera buff. I’m cautious and respectful when I trespass. Once in a while I get challenged but it usually ends well. It helps to look mostly harmless and be super apologetic when caught.
It’s late August and summer feels old. Bright green trees are fading, a few leaves have dropped, and geese are practicing flight formations. A little chill has crept in at night and apples are on the ground already.
Nelson County Fair
Bardstown, Kentucky
I love these little county fairs! They hearken back to the days of the traveling circus. A whole show that sets up an elaborate extravaganza and then is gone in a few days. While there’s no elephants or trapeze, it’s still very much a traveling show. These carnival folks live a tough life on the road and it must be a hard way to make a living. But everybody around here really looks forward to the County Fair. I hope this summer tradition continues for years to come.
I’m determined to thoroughly enjoy the summer this year. No more hiding in the air conditioning! I’ve been out playing in the water, going to concerts and art shows, and enjoying the company of new and old friends. I’ve even stopped complaining about the heat and having to mow grass. I know, hard to believe!
We bought a couple of Pedego electric bikes last week. Go ahead, laugh all you want. Call us slackers, wimps, and lazy geezers. But these electric bikes are the best thing we’ve ever bought! Ranks right up there with our Roomba robot vacuum.
