Big Dawg Radio

by Richie

You gotta celebrate life’s little milestones. Like a short stint on the local radio station.

Friday night was rocking at Campbellsville’s premier radio station – 99.9 The Big Dawg. From a smooth studio on Main Street, a solid wall of sound broadcast out through an 11, 000 watt antenna. That’s a hefty push for a small town station.

Owner/operator Larry Smith welcomed us into his studio for a quick one-song live performance. Larry gave some easy instructions, then Tim with his guitar and Sarah with her songbird vocals took their place at the mics.

It was fascinating to witness the machinery of live radio. Of course vinyl records are long gone. The venerable stacks of wax have been replaced by all-digital media, computerized and coordinated with a small laptop and a giant console. Larry trimmed the dials with a deft hand and a gorgeous sound went out over the airwaves.

While Tim strummed on strings, Sarah stuck the landing with a Fleetwood Mac song.

Here’s the broadcast –

Afterward Larry showed us around his award-winning studio. Then he had to leap back to the microphone for a round of live commercials.

And thus Tim goes, ever so briefly, into the annals of radio history.

Well done, Big Dawg!

You’re definitely spending a lot of time “on air” of late. Well, Tim is. Although my years in broadcasting started with hanging out at a rock station on Friday nights with a couple of my friends (one was dating the guy on the air) when we were seniors in high school, to marrying a DJ of my own and ending up working at the station as well, the only way my voice went out over the airwaves was via recorded commercials. I definitely wouldn’t recognize a control room these days! We were still playing 78 rpm album tracks or having a single song on an 8-track player. All the commercials were recorded to 8-track, too. Thanks for the look-see at how radio has evolved, Richie!
