The joy of traveling the byways is when you happen upon an unexpected delight – like a U-Pick-It Flower Farm!

I hate driving the interstate in the RV. First of all, it’s boring. Secondly, the traffic is a booger. You just can’t weave around trucks easily in a 6-ton vehicle. So I often choose the secondary roads for a trip of extended length. Yeah, it’s a little slower. And maybe I get there an hour or two later. But the backroads offer a chance to encounter some random treat you might have otherwise missed.
That’s how I found Pickwick Place in Bucyrus, Ohio – a whole farm of blooming flowers just waiting to be picked.
I was told Bucyrus has a group of dedicated gardeners who start early in the spring to plant a dizzying array of flowers. There’s acres here just for picking.
For a small fee, you select a vase and stuff it as full of flowers as you possibly can. A quart-size mason jar cost $25. They’ll even loan you some garden shears!
I spent a long while roaming the flower beds to select my bouquet.
Pickwick Place also has an antique mall, a huge farmers market store, and a cozy cafe.
Since Bucyrus is the Home of the Bratwurst Festival, I had to try their bratwurst egg rolls. Trust me on this one – they were fabulous!
The U-Pick Flower Farm and Pickwick complex is on Route 23 in upstate Ohio. It’s a popular road to Lake Erie. I passed by the sign, turned around, and was glad I made the stop.
“You always wanted to stop here” was one advertisement. Absolutely worth it! Go ahead, take time to smell -or pick- the roses.

Sounds amazing! Wish we had something like this around here.
Pretty special!
What a great idea – wish we had one of these around here! Thanks for uncovering this for us.
A new business idea! Count me in!
I loved this tour of the flowers. What a great idea these folks have for sharing flowers. And I love the idea
of enjoying the back roads and really connecting with those living there.
btw what lake were you approaching? I am originally from Michigan, a child of the Great Lakes.
Loved the refection you did on the sisters of Loretto working for PEACE. I am a Loretto co-member but am presently back in Nicaragua where I worked for 38 years.
thanks for sharing the adventures you have along the way! Your photography is wonderful. wonder if you will return to U-Pick Fresh Flowers early in the season next year.
Thanks so much! Bucyrus Ohio is on the route to Lake Erie, and worth a stop!
Oh your post had me recall a trip to Huber’s U-Pick Farm a while back with the boys and we made it to the sunflower and zinna flowers for beautiful bouquets to bring home and share. What amazing places you find on your travels, out of the way charming finds often with unexpected “eats” to try!
A lovely surprise on a long driving day!
So cool!
Super fun!
