‘Tis Of Thee

A tribute to America’s 250 celebration – local style.

North of the 49th parallel, Canadians are very patriotic. Nearly every building, private or public, flies the Canadian flag. I was curious how we measured up, so I drove a local 10 mile circle to count how many American flags could be found. Hey, it was Monday and I had an empty calendar!

I found flags in unlikely places as well as where you’d expect.

Some trespassing occurred, and I needed to explain myself to several property owners. However, there was no reasoning with a pack of hound dogs guarding an old tobacco barn.

Mostly I hoped to be quick enough with the shutter before the homeowner could draw a bead on me.

Later in the day I stuck to photographing flags in public places. Much safer.

Oddly enough, the local biker bar was the winner for patriotic fervor.

We’ve got a long way to catch up with Canada, but some folks still raise the Stars and Stripes. Do you?
