Riding The Rails In Versailles

Rail Explorers

Have you discovered Rail Explorers yet? It’s the best fun you can have in a straight line!

There are several Rail Explorer locations across the US. We joined the one in Versailles (rhymes with rails) at the Bluegrass Railroad Museum.

On an unused railroad track, in a specialized electric powered cart, we took an easy two-hour ride through the countryside.

Twenty rail carts were lined up, both two and and four-seaters, for the ticketed ride. The staff gave a few quick instructions and we hopped on.

Each seat in the rail cart has a set of bicycle pedals. One seat is designated as the driver. The driver has control of the hand brake and the electric motor. A steady, easy turn of the driver’s pedals will engage the motor. No exertion, and off you go!

We headed out of the rail yard in groups. Rail Explorer staff timed the launch of each cart with plenty of space between riders so you have an uncrowded tour.

Off we went to explore – in a straight line. The carts go about 5 mph. A few quick pumps on the pedals and you’re moving easily with the electric motor.

It was a 10 mile round trip through some mighty pretty scenery.

The tracks crossed a couple of intersections, all well marked.  Most were farm driveways, and one was a county road where a staffer flagged us through.

The end of the line was at an overlook with Wild Turkey Distillery in the background and the Kentucky River far down below.

We had a little picnic here while the staff turned the carts around on a mini-turntable.

Then off we went again, riding the rails…

Traveling back the same 5 miles, the whole excursion took about two hours.

At one point I realized I didn’t need to pedal at all. Tim and the electric motor were doing all the work.

A couple of hours later, we arrived back in the railyard and the trip was over.

What a great way to spend the day!

They offer several rides per day, and even nighttime excursions. But you do need to purchase tickets in advance because the rides fill up fast.

I’ve climbed on board the museum’s regular train for the trip to Boston, KY and back, but I’d never heard of or caught a glimpse of the type of travel you and Tim enjoyed! Good thing the ride didn’t take you across that very decrepit wooden bridge!
